We are all about gentle walks - run by local people for local people - to improve health and well-being, meet people and form a sense of community belonging. The walks leave The Surgery in Gadbridge Road at 10.30 every Monday. We offer a gentle stroll, taking in the green spaces and lanes of Weobley with an experienced Walk Leader - just turn up in sensible shoes.
“Walking is the first thing an infant wants to do and the last thing an old person wants to give up. Walking is the exercise that does not need a gym. It is the prescription without medicine, the weight control without diet, and the cosmetic that can’t be found in a chemist. It is the tranquilliser without a pill, the therapy without a psychoanalyst, and the holiday that does not cost a penny. What’s more, it does not pollute, consumes few natural resources and is highly efficient. Walking is convenient, it needs no special equipment, is self-regulating and inherently safe. Walking is as natural as breathing. Founder Walk21, 1999”
A short definition of a health walk might be: 'A purposeful, brisk walk undertaken on a regular basis.' Any walk which is specifically designed and carried out to improve one's health is a health walk. The impact on health will depend on the person, how often and how intense the walk is. Brisk, purposeful walking (i.e. more than just a stroll) is proven to have a benefit to cardiovascular health (the heart).
Organised walks, such as the Walking for Health walks, offer the chance to get outdoors (often in a natural environment) and meet people. We hear time and time again about walkers who have greatly reduced stress and made lasting friendships because of the social element of our health walks.
Imagine the scene...
You reach your destination, breathing in deeply the fresh air, and taking in the amazing landscape around you. You look around you and congratulate your fellow walkers with a warm smile. You can feel you heart beating and you feel alive. Once upon a time you never thought you could do this. Your walk leader comes over and gives you a pat on the back and you feel a real sense of achievement. This is a health walk.
You might be brand new to walking; you might not have thought about walking for your health before. Perhaps issues such as time, transportation or ill-health have got in the way in the past? Maybe you just need someone else to walk with you? Walking for Health is here to encourage you to make a start, get into the open-air, and you'll soon realise the benefits of walking on your health and wellbeing. Thousands of people have started walking for their health. You can too.
Companionship lasts longer than the walk as most walks are followed by a coffee or lunch. So it is a very real contact with your neighbours. They meet on Mondays at 10.30am outside the Doctors Surgery in Gadbridge Road.
